Accessibility during road reconstruction works
Client: Bureau StadsRegie, Amsterdam
The Municipality of Amsterdam wanted to improve the situation when road reconstruction works take place.
Therefore the department Bureau Stadsregie carried out a research on temporary measurements and needed feedback on the usability and applicability.
P5 was commissioned by Bureau StadsRegie to evaluate the usability and applicability of temporary measurements during road reconstruction activities. In several phases of the works in the western part of Amsterdam, products like temporary fences, pavements, guidelines and information points were applied. Different types of road users (including persons with visual impairments, with walking impairments and users of wheelchairs and electric scooters) have been observed and interviewed. Also professionals involved in the reconstruction were interviewed and the traffic situation was checked on a weekly basis.
Finally the results have been discussed in a workshop with the projects manager, the contractor and other professionals involved.
The research led to insight for improvement of measurements and measurements proven to be unnecessary. Also recommendations were formulated for measurements for the wider traffic area around road works and maintenance of measurements.
The products used in the test were redesigned by KVD reframing and design.
